A Summarized History of Avon

Since 1885 Avon have had great success in their formula for making quality tyres, this was proven when in 1933 Rolls Royce claimed them as standard on all their cars.

But before 1933, in 1911 Avon started producing motorcycle tyres, and have done so for then past 93 years. Avon have battled through many wars and still have prevailed.

In 1957, Avon has a go at the thrilling world of motorcycle racing for the first time, with some degree of success, between 1958 and 1963, every solo world motorcycle champion rode on Avon tyres.

From then on Avon enjoyed several racing successes including extended contracts and in 1983 Avon creates Avon Racing and supplies racing tyres Internationally.

1986 is another chequered flag and Avon agrees to making tyres for the Formula 3000's, starting from the 1988 season; Avon remains the official tyre supplier to Formula 3000 to this day.

The UK and Europe in 1993 jump onto the Avon Racing bandwagon and announce Avon as their official suppliers.

1997 comes and a new dawn for Avon as it is acquired by Cooper Tire & Rubber Company, Ohio, USA. The deal gives Avon access to even more high-tech design and development facilities.

When 2000 approached, Avon pushes forward the boundaries of radial motorcycle tyre design with the Azaro range; this high performance tyre successfully blends great grip with long life. Meanwhile, Avon Racing clinches a three-year deal to provide tyres for the US Formula 2000 National Championship. The technologies that created the original Azaro bike tyre in the year 2000, have been refined and improved; the new Azaro grips harder, lasts longer.

Today Avon Racing continues to supply competition tyres to more than 150 race championships around the world. Meanwhile, Avon's range of high performance motorcycle tyres continues to expand its coverage of the market.

Clean sweep for Avon racing tyres at the

The bikes may be from the last century, but there's nothing dated about the recent performances from Avon-shod riders at the 2014 Bennetts 500 Classic TT, held on the Isle of Man.

Avon Tyres, based in Wiltshire, had a clean sweep of the top spots, with Ian Lougher on the Team Flitwick Paton taking the top step on the podium, Dan Cooper in second and Bruce Anstey in third. Anstey also took the Mike Hailwood Trophy for the top-placed single-cylinder two-valve bike.

The lead had passed from legend to legend, with John McGuinness, Ryan Farquhar and Michael Rutter all leading at one stage, before retiring from the race with mechanical woes.

All of the top riders were using Avon’s AM22 and AM26 Roadrider race tyres at this year's event. These retro-styled tyres use modern carcass constructions and tread compounds, giving 21st century levels of grip, stability and longevity – essential for the highest level of classic racing. Indeed, even the classic race bikes from BMW in Germany have been sporting Avon tyres this year at races and on parade laps. Georg Meier's legendary 1939 TT winner, the Kompressor, was back at the Island proudly wearing Avon rubber on its rims.

One clear example of how well the Avons work is in the 2014 lap times. The Paton machines were lapping the Mountain course at 113mph in practice, with only a 500cc engine, and maximum tyre widths of 110-section front and rear – narrower than the front tyre on most modern commuting bikes.
