Riders Caring for Riders-Beyond Medicine

Home Page

This site is dedicated to the "DR WINGS Bike Force"  and the work they do for :

    M.A.R.I (Motorcycle Accident Rehabilitation Initiative)

What we are about.

We are all for helping the Riders & Passengers of Motorcycles getting extra care after an accident or illness that takes them through the doors of an Hospitals ED or Medical Centre.

M.A.R.I does valuable work helping injured Riders beyond that which medicine can do.

During the year, we hold some special rides and assist others with their rides too.

These were two such rides. One on the 15th To 17th September

The FCR Rally to Tottenham, Hosted by BMWTC NSW

and on the 23rd September. The Big Ride for M.A.R.I to the Grey Gums Cafe on the Putty RD.

This initiative will be a high profile motorcycle ride from Berowra to Cessnock via Wollombi ( approx. 145 km ).

This route was selected as it covers some parts of the main weekend 'loops' used by recreational riders.

You are advised to be early at the sign in point, Berowra RSL Club Car park from 8.00am when the club will be doing Breakfast for riders before the first will leave at 9.30am

How you can Help or get involved

What we need now.

We need more volunteers to put their hand up to get involved with us.

This is the best thing a person that rides a bike can do this year.

The DR Wings Bike Force Team with the M.A.R.I. Looks after all riders no matter what the injury or illness may be.

We help all riders & pillion passengers that need assistance or advice. Discretion is a high priority for us. To keep your information safe.

You do not have to be a current rider or passenger to get involved, just having RIDING experience is what is required. For you to understand what their needs are and an idea of what they may be going through.

We are looking for more Hospitals and Hospital Staff to get involved as well, as the communication from staff to patient about the work we do to help speed up their recovery.

After you have been introduced into the system in your local area. There is no better feeling than knowing that you have been able to help another rider out  on the road to recovery.

In my experience over the past years doing this work I have noticed several things.

  • Helping others is very gratifying
  • It’s a real chance to give something back to those that really need our help
  • The majority of the time it’s only a matter of a phone call to check on a patient. During this conversation you can gauge if the person requires more attention from the team or not. Remembering that before you speak with them a manager has already done so and assessed the situation. Your call is because they wanted further contact and to see if they require anything further from us.

In addition we have offered assistance with,

  • Hospital or Home Visits someone to have a coffee with
  • When doing a visit have Motorcycle Mags in hand for the patient
  • Offer to collect their personal belongs if required to do so for safe keeping until their release
  • Offer to have their bike picked up and to contact their insurance company on their behalf
  • Offer them free advice on legal matters towards the accident if required by way of Maurice Blackburn Lawyers advice line.
  • Offering to feed pet or pets that maybe at home (should be as simple as contacting their next door neighbor and get them to do so for us)
  • This would be the same for mowing their lawn or putting their rubbish bins out for them as well.

Usually I have found that this has not been a problem as if the neighbor on either side may not be able to do so the one across the street is glad to help them out.

Skills that are needed to do the job.

  • Being able to communicate with others,
  • Being out going with a friendly demeanor,
  • Being able to retain information or to read easily from an information sheet
  • Having a mobile phone or land line and maybe the internet to access communications
  • Having transport is essential
  • Good health
  • You need to pass a police check
  • Working with Children Check - could be necessary
  • Working with the team, or in pairs, or by yourself

If you feel that this is not too much to ask, contact us.

BMW named DU with George & Charis Schwarz donated $30,000.00 from the sale of their book Highlights of the Road to get this up and going after doing laps of the World.

" M.A.R.I"  the Motorcycle Accident Rehabilitation Initiative.

It’s for all of you. This volunteer service is well overdue in the Australian health system and the first of its kind in the world to look after any riders passing through Hospitals' Doors.

It’s all about Motor Cyclists caring for other motor cyclists in a volunteer role.

Riders For Riders; Helping any way we can to support them and to aid in their speedy recovery and helping their families to deal with what has happened to their loved ones.

  • Remembering the work carried out daily by all the medical staff throughout Australia.
  • Raising awareness of the DR Wings Team and the MARI Initiative.
  • Raising funds throughout Australia to aid us in helping others.

The different categories will hold information to help you make a decision on supporting our fund raising and awareness drive. While supplying the information needed to those wishing to become a DR Wings Team Member Volunteer.

About Us

The "DR Wings Bike Force" are based on the Central Coast and in Sydney. The Initiative was formed from members of the M.A.R.I team based at St Vincent's Hospital Darlinghurst Sydney.

The team consists of members from the Sydney Motorcycle Club, BMW Touring Club of NSW also Members of the Ulysses Club & lastly the Committee For Safer Motorcycle Routes in the Hunter.

Some of the team have been involved first hand with motor cycle accidents and know exactly what a patient is going through or has cared for one that has been there before.

All this knowledge helps others to adapt and get moving again quicker in both mind and body.
