How you can Help or get involved

What we need now.

We are looking for more Hospitals and Hospital Staff to get involved.

Communication from staff to patient about the work we do to help speed up the recovery of the motorcyclist- patient.

We need more volunteers to put their hand up to get involved with us.

This is the best thing, a person who rides a bike, can do this year. It will also make a huge difference to a patient as well as take some pressure of Hospital staff.

The DR Wings Bike Force Team with the M.A.R.I initiative, assists all riders,

no matter what the injury or illness.

We help all riders & pillion passengers that need assistance or advice.

Discretion is a high priority for us. To keep your information safe.

You do not have to be a current rider or passenger to get involved.

Just having RIDING experience is what is required.

Being a fellow motorcyclist may give you a better understanding of what their needs are and a good idea of what they may be going through.

There is no better feeling than knowing that you have been able to help another rider, out  on the road to recovery.

In my experience over the past years doing this work I have noticed several things,

  • Helping others is very gratifying
  • It’s a real chance to give something back to those who really need our help
  • The majority of the time it’s only a matter of a phone call to check on a patient.
  • During this conversation you can gauge if the person requires more attention from the team or not.
  • Remembering that before you speak with them a manager has already done so and assessed the situation with a hospital staff member. We do call to make sure that             all is well, and, to see if they require anything further assistance from us.

(Because We CARE) In addition we have offered assistance with,

  • Hospital or Home Visits with someone that shares the same interest in motorcycling (and to have a coffee and a chat)
  • When having a visit, we have Motorcycle Mags in hand, for the patient to read.
  • Offer to collect their personal belongs if required to do so for safe keeping until their release, (as hospitals do not have a lot of storage)
  • Offer to have their bike picked up from the accident site or Police storage facility as storage is very expensive and charged by the day.
  • Contacting their insurance company on their behalf, when you are unable to do it yourself.
  • Offer them free legal advice towards their accident if required by way of the specialists at Maurice Blackburn Lawyers advice line.Your information is kept confidential.
  • Offering to feed pet or pets that maybe home alone (should be as simple as contacting their next door neighbor and get them to do so for you).
  • If no one is available, the RSPCA will care for them until you are well enough yourself.
  • This would be the same for mowing the lawn or putting their rubbish bins out for them as well. No one wants to come home to a rubbish bin that has food in it that has "gone off"

Usually I have found that this has not been a problem as if the neighbor on either side may not be able to do so the one across the street is glad to help them out.

  • Transport to and from hospital or rehab visits.
  • We offer motorists the opportunity to have a FREE late model loan vehicle until their situation is sorted. That's right at no cost to you. This will enable you or your partner to get to and from shopping and other appointments like work or taking the kids to school.
  • You do not need to be injured to qualify for this Free service, that is in most Australian cities. All you need is to be not at fault and the other driver is insured, that's it.

Skills that are needed by a Dr Wings Bike Force member to do the job

  • Being able to communicate with others,
  • Being out going with a friendly demeanor,
  • Being able to retain information, or to read easily from an information sheet
  • Having a mobile phone or land line and maybe the internet to access communications
  • Having transport is essential
  • Good health
  • You need to pass a police check
  • Working with Children Check - could be necessary
  • Working with the team, or in pairs, or by yourself

If you feel that this is not too much to ask, contact us.

About Us

The "DR Wings Bike Force" are based on the Central Coast and in Sydney.

The Initiative was formed from members of the M.A.R.I team based at St Vincent's Hospital Darlinghurst Sydney.

The team consists of members from the Sydney Motorcycle Club, BMW Touring Club of NSW also Members of the Ulysses Club & lastly the Committee For Safer Motorcycle Routes in the Hunter.

Some of the team have been involved first hand with motor cycle accidents and know exactly what a patient is going through, or has cared for one that has been there before.

All this knowledge helps others to adapt and get moving again quicker in both mind and body.
